The Tragedy In New York

Every generation has its marker events. Every nation has its turns. Like an enigmatic clock, the wheels of history go around. The Revolutionary War. The Civil War. Pearl Harbor. The Terrorist Acts in New York and Washington. On much smaller scales, our nation has been silenced by other historical moments, large in the American psyche but not as impressive as acts of war within or against our country. The Stock Market Collapse in 1929. The assassination of John F. Kennedy. The Challenger explosion. Columbine. Tuesday's carnage will be forever etched in the American fabric. Innocence was lost. Blood was spilled. Peace was taken. Just like 12/7/41 was a "day of infamy" so will be 9-11-01. In my attempt to bring comfort to you and myself, I simply offer another, perhaps more somber "11". Psalm 11: "In the Lord I take refuge. How then can you say to me: 'Flee like a bird to your mountain. For look, the wicked bend their bows; they set their arrows against the strings to shoot from the shadows at the upright in heart. When the foundations are being destroyed, what can the righteous do?' The LORD is in his holy temple; the LORD is on his heavenly throne. He observes the sons of men; his eyes examine them. The LORD examines the righteous, but the wicked and those who love violence his soul hates. On the wicked he will rain fiery coals and burning sulfur; a scorching wind will be their lot. For the LORD is righteous, he loves justice; upright men will see his face." Amen.
